Arrange numbers in increasing and decreasing order
- Explain definition of increasing order. Increase = number gets more / amount gets greater.
- Teacher to 1st demonstrate using number card. (Arrange number in increasing order).
- Display a row of number cards or print picture card.
- Instruct children to say out number shown on card OR count the number of object in picture card.
- Prompt children to arrange the number card OR picture card in increasing order.
Picture graphs
make picture graphs of given data
- Include collecting and organizing data
- Include the use of symbolic representations, e.g. represents one child
- Exclude picture graphs with scales such as each * represents 5 children

Comparing & Ordering 1 – 10 / 20
compare two sets in terms of the difference in number
- Include the concept of one-to-one correspondence
- Include use of the phrases ‘more’, ‘less’
- Include finding ‘How many more/less?’
- Include use of the words: greater, smaller
- Exclude use of the symbols [ > ] and [ < ]
Compare two sets in terms of the difference in number
- Teacher 2 show children 2 sets of plate containing different number of apples in the plate.
- Prompt children; How many apples are there in each plate?
- Allow children to place the correct number card beside each plate.
- Prompt children: Which plate has more apples? Which number is greater (e.g. 3 or 5)?
- Once children is ready to go in depth into topic, prompt them e.g.
Plate A – 5 apples | Plate B – 3apples
How many more apples does plate A has?
How many more apples does plate A has?
Compare numbers up to 10 / 20
- Using picture cut outs or number cards, prompt children which number is greater? OR
- Allow children to place number of object (in a plate) or (print) picture cut out.
- Then place the correct number card beside the plate/ picture cut out
- Prompt your children for the greater or smaller number between the 2 plates.
K1 / K2
Cardinal (set of 2s / 5s / 10s)
- Teacher to teach children counting in 2s / 5s. (sets of 2s / 5s)
- Begin with displaying a tray of flags (e.g. 20).
- Count the number of flags altogether.
- Teacher then to prompt children that we can count faster by counting in sets.
- Place 2 flags each on a paper plate.
- Emphasize that each plate has 2 flags.
- Begin counting in 2s ; 2, 4, 6, 8…20
- Practice with children counting in 2s before going into 5s (large group).
- Given out picture cut outs to children.
- Instruct children to place picture cards into groups / sets that teacher requires.
- Prompt children to do counting in set individually.
- Allow children to explore into other counting of sets only if children are ready!
Ordinal Number 1st – 5th / 10th (teaching through story)
- Using picture cut out of (e.g. deliverymen)
- Best way to teach ordinal number is through story telling (large group)
- E.g. Storyline:
5 delivery men sent their order/food.
1st men went to Hanni’s house
2nd men went to Joey’s house continue till 5th / 10th.
1st men went to Hanni’s house

Ordinal Number 1st – 5th / 10th (teaching through game)
